When to Aerate Your Lawn

WHEN TO AERATE YOUR LAWN

AERATION

When you are aerating, you need to get the timing and the frequency of this correct, to make sure it does not damage the lawn and provides the best results.

How Often

Aeration does not need to be done especially regularly, unless you have particularly high traffic on your lawn. As standard, you will normally want to aerator once or maybe twice a year. However, if your lawn gets a lot of use, you may want to opt for 2 or 3 times a year.

Conditions

You need the conditions to be right for aeration and the main consideration is the moisture in the lawn. You want the lawn to be damp, so that the aerator is able to reach the correct depth in the soil and it makes it much easier!

However, it needs to be damp rather than soaking wet, so avoid aerating when there is standing water on the soil or it is waterlogged.

Time of Year

When you aerate a lawn, you can do it throughout the year, other than when there is a frost. It can cause some distress and damage to the lawn initially, but it is not as invasive as other tasks, so can be done just before and just after the growing season (April to November).

So the ideal time of year is the start or end of the growing season, when the lawn will repair itself but you also have enough moisture in the lawn. So, opt for:

  • March
  • April
  • May
  • September
