Why Fertilise Your Lawn

WHY FERTILISE YOUR LAWN

FERTILISATION

Fertilising your lawn is important if you want a healthy, green and resilient lawn. By fertilising your lawn, you will ensure that it has the required nutrients to flourish. If you fail to give your lawn the necessary nutrients, you will end up with a lawn that is brown, unhealthy and dormant, so this should be a big part of your lawn care programme.

Fertilisers will contain Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium which combine to keep your lawn healthy. The amounts and ratios of these will vary depending on the treatment that you choose, but realistically, this is all pretty boring stuff that you don’t need to know about. Just make sure you buy the right product for the type of year

NPK Ratios

If you are are really keen on knowing about what the different elements of NPK do, then check out the below:

  • N - Nitrogen - promotes growth and gives a lawn its bright green colour
  • P - Phosphorus - helps the root system to grow and develops a lawn that is more resistant to adverse weather
  • K - Potassium - promoted overall growth within the grass

Different Fertilisers

When you are looking for a fertiliser, you will have 2 main types:

Take a look at the different pages for these to find out more about them.

A Word of Warning!

Fertilisers can cause damage if they are over applied, so take it easy with them; apply a small amount and increase the amount slowly. If you apply too much or fail to water after the treatment, there is a very good chance you will scorch your lawn which results in it turning black!

So, make sure that you
water the lawn heavily after applying a fertiliser. If you are unlucky enough to scorch your lawn, all you can do is dilute the fertiliser by watering it as much as possible. By scorching the lawn, you will damage the grass but not the roots, so you just need to let it grow out and stick with a normal mowing routine to clear the scorched grass.
